How to Celebrate VE Day from Home…

This year marks 75 years since the guns fell silent at the end of the war in Europe. As a nation its an opportunity to reflect on the enormous sacrifice, courage and determination of people from all walks of life who saw us through this dark and terrifying period.

Unfortunately, the three-day international celebration that will take place from 8th May to 10th May 2020, has been rescheduled for a later date. However many will still be marking the occasion at home and Hedge End Town Council will be taking part in the Battle’O’ ER at 3.00pm, Friday 8th May 2020 (Bank Holiday) which sees thousands of

pipers playing of Battle’s O’er for VE DAY 75. We are hoping our very own piper will be marking the moment the British Prime Minister Winston Churchill announced that the war in Europe was over. We will be sharing this via our social media channels. 

For those of you still keen to mark the occasion from home, there is still lots you can do! Below we have some simple ideas to help you celebrate.

Picnic
  • Host an indoor tea party or your own garden picnic. If your loved ones are not living with you, consider inviting them to join you online to share in the celebration via video chat like zoom or skype. 
     
  • Create your own bunting! BBC Local Radio has shared some great templates and instructions on how to design your own. A fab way to get creative.

  • Fundraise money for a veteran charity. At a time when charities are under enormous pressure, giving back has never been so important.
  • Tune in to music of the era. Stream the music which defined the times and have a little dance around the kitchen.
  • Turn on your local radio station for entertainment. 
  • Pick films from the 1940’s and have a movie day. Classic’s such as ‘Casablanca’ and ‘It’s a wonderful life’, are a must see! IMDB have some great ideas in there top 100 count down.
  • Bake a Victoria Sponge… BBC good food has a wonderfully simple recipe for you to try.
  • The Queen’s speech will be broadcast on the BBC at 21:00 – the exact moment her father, King George VI, gave a radio address 75 years ago.
