Community Awards Winner 2021

2021 Winner Announced

Every year since 2007, we ask people to nominate outstanding individuals whose dedication and selflessness to make the community a better place is an inspiration to those around them.

We are very please to announce that the winner this year is Mike Glen for his voluntary work with the Official 2428 Hedge End Squadron RAF Air Cadets.

Mike says:

“Winning the HETC Serving the Community Award was a complete shock and I am incredibly grateful. As a volunteer you don’t do what you do for recognition. I was an Air Cadet when I was younger and my experiences shaped who I am today and the values I live my life by. The great thing about the RAF Air Cadets is that no matter whether a cadet goes on to choose a military career or not, as staff, we are there to help inspire, motivate and develop our next generation. This is our way of giving something back to say thanks. I must also mention that we couldn’t do what we do without a great staff team, civilian committee and the flexibility and support shown by my employer, Heathrow Airport.

I have been the Commanding Officer of the squadron for over 3 years but have been a part of the staff team in other capacities since 2012. The last year has been challenging for all and seen our squadron switch to online activities. Despite the pause in face to face activity, cadets have still had the opportunity to train in areas such as radio communications, cyber, theory of flight, space studies and more. Cadets from the squadron recently entered a national competition where they had to suggest alternative uses for satellites as part of a UK industry led challenge and placed 6th overall.

As lockdown continues to be eased, we are now focussing on a safe return for our cadets. We will be recruiting again in summer so if you are interested in joining us or finding out more about what we do then please get in touch and follow us on Facebook.”
