HEDGE END TOWN COUNCIL - SERVING THE COMMUNITY
PADDLING POOL CLOSED DUE TO VANDALISM
The popular paddling pool in Hedge End was vandalised yesterday by groups of youngsters intent on wreaking havoc. In the late afternoon and into the evening, boys approximately aged between 12 to
14 years had created a mud slide with excess water from the paddling pool on the neighbouring recreation ground. They then decided to wash the mud and clumps of dirt in the paddling pool after
the pool was closed and locked and run riot in the arena. Earlier it had been reported by the public, that they had been charging through the pool in stampede fashion and knocking babies and young
children over. Staff made attempts to prevent this incident but to no avail and were met with abuse. The following day, Hedge End Town Council staff were left surveying the damage. A feature litter
bin was broken into and the contents strewn into the paddling pool, perimeter railings were damaged and loosened and above all, the paddling pool was grimy with the mud clogging the natural
filtration system and contaminating the water. The neighbouring kiosk and facilities were also covered in mud and detritus leaving them in an unacceptable and appalling condition.
The Town Clerk commented that ‘A minority of young boys have spoilt the enjoyment for the majority with their wanton behaviour and it is very disappointing that the pool is now out of commission for the time being. The cleaning process will take some time to return the paddling pool to the high standards demanded by the Town Council’.
Many disconsolate people have offered donations to re-open the paddling pool such is the popularity of this feature.
